What works about Education?
There are some things in the current school-age education system that work. Local Authority delivery with National Co-ordination works.
Universities’ educational independence needs to be fiercely protected and the current model does that.
What can we do now to make the Scottish Education better?
More funding, to mitigate the £400 million of cuts over the last 10 years. We also urgently need to recruit more STEM teachers to prepare students for the changing economy.
We also need to re-establish parity of esteem between Universities and Colleges in Scotland – realising that both are essential to preparing the future workforce.
What big or systematic changes need to be made?
British (including Scottish) children start primary school earlier than most in Europe – does this need to be the case?
Vocational Training is still seen as a drop down from ‘academic studies’ ut many students have a clear idea in their head that they wish to pursue a vocational route. How can we change our education system to achieve this – without the vocational route being seen as ‘lesser’?
How do we ensure that University education, for those that want it, is accessible to poorer students? While Tuition-Fee free education is seen as vital, student debt has increased, while bursaries and grants have reduced – increasing the debt burden on students, meaning those without families able to support them face the greatest burden. What is the best model to rectify this – Tuition Fees; Graduate Endowment; Graduate Tax?
